I am a certified librarian with Masters Degrees in Library & Information Resources and Services, and English Literature

I am a freelance Librarian and Educational Writer; especially of Internet text curriculum aids; magazine articles about nature for people-in-general; poems about nature and other subjects (including thoughts on the philosophy of Christianity); writings for children (a middle-grade novel) (poems) (ready for publication, or in progress).

A LIST OF SOME OF MY PUBLICATIONS:

USING INTERNET PRIMARY SOURCES TO TEACH CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS IN THE SCIENCES (published by ABC-CLIO) for secondary and beginning college students is one of my published curriculum aids. [While the pandemic lurks, this book is online at the Internet Archive/Library, at: https://archive.org/details/usinginternetpri0000john/mode/2up (some chapters should be of interest to, and usable with, pre-teens, most chapters are for high school students or beginning college and university students) (free registration required)]

DISCOVERING ENGLISH LITERATURE IN BITS AND BYTES: AN INTERNET APPROACH… v.1 British Literature – Beginnings has been published by Rohman-Littlefield. Additional chapters for more volumes in British and American Literature are in the editing stage (some ready for  a publisher to consider). These chapters for this series of books is especially for teachers teaching secondary school students and beginning college students; but with some chapters of interest to middle grade students. One volume of chapters at t he top of the editing list is “Classic English Literature for Young Readers” (with chapters ranging from Alice in Wonderland to an Introduction to Harry Potter, then moving onward to the value of imagination, the insights in poetic creation, and beyond).

DISCOVERING NATURE WITH YOUNG PEOPLE: AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY AND SELECTION GUIDE (book published by Greenwood Press)

I am also a writer of poems (e.g., quips based on children’s sayings), novels, and nonfiction (e.g., biography) for children and young teens.  I have published with Highlights’ PUZZLEMANIA. I have some manuscripts ready for publishers.

Poems I have written have been published and won awards. My poems have been published in MODERN HAIKU, DRAGONFLY, FROGPOND, plus WHITE SPIRE (a newsletter of a local Presbyterian church), and GEN (“Graduate English Newsletter” of St. John’s University of Queens NY).

A poem I wrote won first prize Space-Age category in a NEW YORK POETRY FORUM competition.

A short story I wrote for an official STAR TREK Anthology contest achieved second reading status.

I write articles for newsletters and magazines as well. “Nature Place Journal” and “Festival Newsletter for Teachers of English and Shakespeare” are two publications in which my articles are published.

I have written articles and book reviews for magazines including NEW LIBRARY SCENE, LIBRARY JOURNAL, CHRISTIAN LIBRARIAN, ST. ANTHONY MESSENGER, THE BOOKTALKER, WILSON LIBRARY BULLETIN, and more.

I have also written abstracts (i.e., analysis/reviews) of literary magazine articles, and these have been published in ABSTRACTS OF ENGLISH STUDIES.

NOW – A BIO ASIDE – SOME INSIGHTS INTO THE DEVELOPMENT AND WORKINGS OF THE WRITING LIFE OF CAROLYN M JOHNSON:

Visits to her local neighborhood library across the street from her house, the library where she first experienced discoveries of books that ‘urged’ her to read them: the beginnings, the seeds nurtured, for her young and grown up life. Especially influencing her were her discoveries and readings of books were “The Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler,” “Little Women,” “I Remember Mama,” “The Secret Garden,” “National Velvet,” some Lois Lenski historical fiction / biographical stories such as “Indian Captive: The Story of Mary Jemison,” plus some Lassie story books (such as Dorothea Snow’s “Lassie and the Secret of Summer” and “Lassie and the Mystery At Blackberry Bog“) and some Nancy Drew mysteries (such as “The Clue in the Diary“), along with Madeleine L’Engle’s “A Wrinkle in Time.” Meanwhile an idea started floating about her mind while growing up, while reading, and writing literary scribblings, then going to college and library school. Now and then she wrote poems and puzzles, including a now ongoing collection of poetic quips said by children she knows. Then she started some stories. She veered off to write book reviews and bibliographies, then Internet-based curriculum aids in the sciences and English literature for secondary school educators and their students for libraries. (One volume features ‘Some Classic Literary Works for Young People’ in progress).  Meanwhile, she discovered that enticing young readers to see literature’s values means asking questions that spark curiosity and critical thinking, in ways that weave interesting things into stories. Manuscript ideas and tries started presenting themselves; ranging from a library caper, something in a forest glade, and then something that came of a happening experienced and revealed to her by a young nephew. “He planted a seed. I nurtured it. Then there came a blossom.” A manuscript now ready for publication awaits!

What’s waiting precisely: A story, based around a true event her nephew believed happened, has been woven into a unique fictional mystery with magical realism elements, with a beginning coming-of-age story, and purpose-in-life hints, plus features echoing the world in which he grew up; even with hints of today’s world. While inspired by other nephews and nieces, and with her one-eyed feline companion eyeing her activities while tapping her shoulder so she’ll keep staying alert for possibilities, Carolyn now writes articles about people’s interactions with nature in the very area of the novel’s setting, near where she now lives, in northern New York, as well as of a special place she and family members visited: the Garden Island that is Kauai, Hawaii. She also writes some unique observations in poetic form for a Presbyterian Church’s newsletter. All the while, always aiming to polish for publication the novel dear to her and her family’s heart, and offshoots from it.
